Napoli eye Mauro Icardi and Arkadiusz Milik as Gonzalo Higuain replacements

Following the Serie A record sale of Gonzalo Higuain to Juventus, Napoli have moved swiftly to bid for the services of Mauro Icardi and Arkadiusz Milik from Inter Milan and Ajax Amsterdam respectively.

Higuain moved to Juventus after the reigning Serie A champions met his €90 million release clause, to make it the most expensive signing in Italian football history.

The Argentine's departure leaves a huge gap in the Napoli strike force, and the club have begun work on finding possible replacements.

Eredivisie giants Ajax confirmed that the two clubs are in discussion over a possible transfer of Milik, whose record with the Dutch side last season stood at 21 goals in 31 appearances.

"It is correct that Napoli are keen to discuss a transfer," Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars told Voetbal International following reports the Serie A outfit are ready to pay €35m for the 22-year-old.

"But there is no agreement yet."

While Napoli's hopes of signing the Polish international from Ajax are gathering pace, their bid for Inter's Italian marksman Icardi has been met with resistance from Inter president Erick Thohir.

"We're not going to sell Icardi. We've received offers -- from Napoli too -- but we're not going to sell him," Thohir told Inter Channel.

"We extended his contract a year ago. We're like a family and we can always talk if there are problems or discuss what we'd like to achieve together in future.

"He's our captain and an important player for us. We're very happy with him."

Head coach Maurizio Sarri will be hoping to bring in a top striker to help his team go one better, having finished second in the 2015-16 campaign behind eventual champions Juventus.
