Juventus lucky on route to Serie A title - Napoli legend Diego Maradona

Diego Maradona says Juventus deserve to be Serie A champions but feels they have benefited from "a huge amount of luck" this season.

A 1-0 defeat for Maradona's former club Napoli against Roma awarded Juve a fifth straight title with three games to spare on Monday.

They lead the Azzurri by 12 points having completed a remarkable turnaround from one of their worst starts to a season, with 24 wins recorded in their last 25 matches.

"They deserve it," Maradona told Naples TV channel Piuenne. "Juve have gone so many games without dropping points, but I've got to say they won it with a huge amount of luck. They would take two shots on goal and score four goals. I'm not being a sore loser, I'm just telling the truth, which the whole of Italy knows anyway.

"Juventus have some phenomenal players in the Italian federation and in Italian refereeing. It's nothing new. Any problem a Juve player has on the field, he's always right."

Maradona added that Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis needs to improve his relationship with figures of authority in Italian football.

The Argentine said: "He needs to put his own players in the federation and get himself respected, like some Napoli bosses have done in the past. That way, Napoli will have the same strength Juve have.

"The goal Fiorentina scored [on Sunday] is a scandal. A scandal. I watched it on TV and saw Fiorentina have a goal ruled out just because they were playing Juve.

"Giving [Gonzalo] Higuain a four game ban? If Napoli hadn't been challenging for the title, they would have only given him one game, or even half a game."

Meanwhile, Maradona criticised Italy coach Antonio Conte for opting to leave the international team this summer and take over at Chelsea for next season.

"This story about Conte is shameful," he said. "He's the coach of the Italian national team, which carries incredible prestige in the world, and it's disgusting that he's gone and signed a contract with Chelsea.

"It's making so many coaches have to do nothing for a year and go without a club because there's always the same old coaches moving around."
