Fiorentina fans heckle players at open training session after slump in form

Fiorentina had an audience of around 200 fans for their open training session at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Wednesday, but most of those present were not particularly supportive of the team.

Following a 2-0 defeat to Empoli on Sunday and with the club's last win back on Feb. 21, that figure is down on the usual number of fans who turn up for their training sessions. And the mood was mutinous, with a banner reading "respect for our shirts" and plenty of chants being sung to call on the team to deliver more.

"You need to honour the shirts you are wearing," was one of the chants, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, with another calling on the team to show they have character.

There was scattered support for the likes of Federico Bernardeschi and Josip Ilicic at the session, but the majority of Viola fans appeared dismayed by their team once again throwing away a promising start to the season.

Four points from their last six games have seen the Viola fall eight points adrift of third-placed Roma and a place in the Champions League next season, while they were knocked out of the Europa League by Tottenham Hotspur.

Coach Paulo Sousa is being linked with a move away from the club in the summer, not least after dining with representatives of Zenit St Petersburg last week, and his relationship with club bosses is reported to have broken down.

Fiorentina host Sassuolo this weekend and defeat in that game could see the gap over sixth place cut to four points and raise the possibility of them missing out on Europe entirely next season.

Thanks to a strong start to the season, Fiorentina went top of Serie A at the end of September for the first time in over 16 years.
