Juventus win fourth straight; Roma suffer home Serie A defeat

Reigning champions Juventus continued their climb back to the upper reaches of the Serie A table by beating Palermo 3-0 at the Stadio Renzo Barbera on Sunday.

The Bianconeri, who have won the title four times in a row, started the season with back-to-back defeats and have been struggling to make up for lost time ever since. Results in Europe and at home suggest the tide has turned.

Palermo managed to frustrate them until Mario Mandzukic broke the deadlock after half-time. Stefano Sturaro and substitute Simone Zaza confirmed the outcome with late goals and Juve were able to celebrate a fourth straight win that moves them up to fifth.

Roma's bad week ended on a sour note as Atalanta condemned them to a 2-0 defeat at the Stadio Olimpico.

Rudi Garcia's Giallorossi were thrashed 6-1 by Barcelona in the Champions League, and while the French coach was given a vote of confidence heading into this Serie A game, the performance and result may inspire a rethink.

Alejandro Gomez scored and won the penalty which German Denis converted. Maicon saw red for fouling the former while Atalanta's Guglielmo Stendardo and Alberto Grassi followed him down the tunnel before the full-time whistle.

Lazio fell to fellow mid-table dweller Empoli 1-0 at the Stadio Carlo Castellani.

Lorenzo Tonelli struck in the fifth minute for the hosts, heading a Leandro Paredes corner into Lazio keeper Federico Marchetti's bottom right corner.

Udinese striker Cyril Thereau scored twice to inflict a 3-2 defeat on his former club Chievo at the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi.

Alberto Paloschi's 26th-minute opener was cancelled out before the break as Nicolas Frey put through his own net to draw Udinese level heading into the break.

Thereau struck shortly after the restart and again in the 81st minute, with his second goal arriving in response to Roberto Inglese's impressive third goal of the season for Chievo on 72 minutes.

Winless Hellas Verona sank to the bottom of the Serie A table after coming up short in a 3-2 defeat at Frosinone.

The early dismissal of goalkeeper Rafael meant Hellas were hamstrung and they were 3-0 down after 48 minutes.

Daniel Ciofani converted the 22nd-minute penalty that followed Rafael's indiscretion and grabbed his second just before the break. Federico Dionisi scored Frosinone's third, prompting a desperate Verona fightback.

Federico Viviani and Vangelis Moras would slash their hosts' lead to a single goal with strikes in the 69th and 75th minutes -- but the promoted side had done enough to clinch a fourth win of the season.

Carpi left the bottom of the Serie A table as Cristian Zaccardo's late winner downed Genoa 2-1 at the Marassi.

The sixth-minute dismissal of Leonardo Pavoletti did not help Carpi immediately as Genoa would open the scoring through Diogo Figueiras and his angled drive two minutes later.

It was not until the hour mark that the Biancorossi managed to level, former Genoa striker Marco Borriello equalising with a left-footed daisy-cutter.

It fell to World Cup-winning defender Zaccardo to book Carpi their first away win of the season. Borriello provided the 80th-minute pass that his veteran team-mate stuck past Mattia Perin.
