Medhi Benatia left Roma on bad terms - director of sport Walter Sabatini

Roma director of sport Walter Sabatini has said re-signing Medhi Benatia would be difficult because of his acrimonious departure to Bayern Munich just over a year ago.

Benatia was seen as having forced his way out of Roma, claiming they had gone back on promises made to him when he joined from Udinese.

But Sabatini said Benatia had made high salary demands, and the row between the player and his former club only ended when Bayern banned him from talking about his move.

"Can you remember how we left each other last year?" Sabatini asked reporters wanting to know whether the Morocco defender might return to the club.

"Of course I would take him back, but he didn't leave on good terms."

Fellow defender Marquinhos left on better terms, with Roma making a profit of €30 million from the sale of the 21-year-old to Paris Saint-Germain.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reported Sabatini as saying: "He's a great player and I'd love to have him back too -- but he costs €60 million."

With Antonio Rudiger and Leandro Castan sidelined, Roma are short on options at the heart of their defence, with Daniele De Rossi deputising on occasions.

Signing a central defender is therefore seen as a key priority during the winter break.
