Rafa Marquez to miss Mexico-U.S. match with groin injury

Mexico defender Rafa Marquez will miss one month after injuring his right adductor muscle, Hellas Verona confirmed on Tuesday.

The news means Mexico likely will be without two of their veteran defenders for the Confederations Cup playoff, as PSV Eindhoven confirmed on Monday that midfielder Andres Guardado will probably miss four to six weeks with an ankle injury.

Marquez, 36, injured his right thigh while playing against Atalanta on Sunday and will now miss Mexico's crucial CONCACAF Cup match against the United States on Oct. 10.

The Mexico national team have sent their physical therapist, Carlos Pecanha, to Eindhoven to evaluate Guardado's injury and determine whether the 28-year-old can recover in time for the single-match playoff against Jurgen Klinsmann's men.

The veteran Marquez played for El Tri at the Copa America in Chile but sustained an injury to his left leg. He missed the Gold Cup but was added by interim manager Ricardo Ferretti for the team's September friendlies.

Verona are currently sitting in 15th in Serie A and play Inter Milan on Wednesday. They will also be missing captain Luca Toni, as the club also confirmed on Tuesday that he will be out eight weeks with an injury to his right knee.

El Tri team captain Guardado injured his ankle during last week's 2-1 Champions League victory over Manchester United after being forced to come off in the second half following a foul from United defender Chris Smalling.

Mexico and the United States will meet on Oct. 10 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, in a single-game playoff to determine CONCACAF's representative to the 2017 Confederations Cup.

After a roller-coaster summer that included a coaching upheaval, Mexico played Argentina, FIFA's No. 1-ranked team, to a 2-2 draw for the second of two friendlies in preparation for next month's crucial test.

The United States is undefeated in the past six games against Mexico, with three draws and three wins.
