Luciano Spalletti has said he is ready to return to Italy after his contract with Russian club Zenit St Petersburg expired.

Although former Udinese and Roma coach Spalletti was sacked in 2014, he remained on the club's wage bill and was unable to accept another job before either reaching an agreement with them or letting his deal run down.

But now the issue has been resolved, and the 56-year-old said he was ready to go back to work in his native country.

"I'm a coach like many others, waiting for that call to come," he told Sky Sport Italia. "I'd like to coach in Italy again, back home.

"It was a good experience to coach abroad and it has improved me -- but if the right opportunity were to come along, I wouldn't mind returning to Serie A."

That opportunity could come at Napoli, who are on the lookout for a new coach following the departure of Rafael Benitez to Real Madrid.

Spalletti's old club Udinese are also in the market while the Fiorentina job could also become available, with current coach Vincenzo Montella reportedly undecided about his future.

The coach guided both Udinese and Roma into the Champions League and won the Coppa Italia twice for Roma.

He led Zenit to Russian titles in 2010 and 2012, but lost his job after a run of only one win in 11 matches.
