Juventus' Claudio Marchisio to return to training after knee injury scare

Claudio Marchisio is set to return to training for Juventus only days after being told by the Italian Football Association (FIGC) that his season was over.

Marchisio was sent back to Turin for further tests with what the FIGC said was an ACL injury. Italy team doctor Enrico Castellacci suggested the 29-year-old would miss six to eight months.

However, further tests conducted by Juventus' own medical team ruled out a tear of the ligaments, saying instead that he had just sprained his knee.

After a few days' rest, Marchisio is now due to return to the training field and he may even be fit to face Empoli on Saturday.

"Let's get started!!!" Marchisio posted on his Facebook page having expressed his thanks to all the fans who had wished him well since hearing the initial diagnosis last Friday.

The incident has prompted the FIGC to call an end to all medical declarations with new guidelines now in force that will see injured players sent back to their clubs without any announcement being made in future.

Information over any injury will then be passed into the hands of the players' clubs.

In the aftermath of the national team's announcement that Marchisio had torn ligaments, Italy coach Antonio Conte received death threats from angry Juventus fans who claimed he had been overworking the players in training.
