Rafa Benitez frustrated as penalty miss costs Napoli third place

Napoli boss Rafa Benitez bemoaned the missed penalty that cost his side the chance to move into third place in the Serie A table on Wednesday.

With almost a quarter of the Serie A season played, seven clubs are grouped within a single point of each other behind league leaders Juventus and second-placed Roma.

AC Milan edged up to third with a 1-1 draw at Cagliari on Wednesday, but Napoli wasted the chance to move a point clear of the Rossoneri when Gonzalo Higuain missed a late spot-kick in their 1-1 draw at Atalanta -- leaving them seventh in the congested table.

Benitez, whose side took third place last season to claim Champions League football, told Sky Sport Italia: "We've thrown away five points from missed penalties.

"If we'd scored this one tonight, we would have been up to third. We're doing everything to win games but we're just not winning. We were in control from start to finish and deserved the points."

Napoli host Roma on Saturday, and the coach added: "We're going to have to be even more determined. It's going to be a special game between two top sides."

Milan coach Filippo Inzaghi, meanwhile, told his postmatch news conference that he was "not even looking at the league table."

"We got an important point," he said. "We could have got more. I want us to get back to winning ways on Sunday [at home to Palermo], as that would allow us to remain in a good position."
