Massimo Moratti steps down as honorary president of Inter Milan

Massimo Moratti has stepped down as honorary president of Inter Milan, effectively ending an almost 20-year association with the club.

Moratti -- whose family took over at Inter in 1995 -- sold his majority holding to Erick Thohir in November, but was asked to stay on as vice-president. He turned down that offer, but agreed to take the honorary role.

On Thursday, his Internazionale Holding Srl group released a statement, published by Il Corriere dello Sport, announcing his "resignation, on this day, from the role of honorary president of FC Internazionale Milano kindly offered to him by Mr Erik Thohir in November last year."

His son Angelomario, an adviser to the board, and fellow advisers Rinaldo Ghelfi and Alberto Manzonetti, have also tendered their resignations, but Internazionale Holding Srl will continue to hold 29.5 per cent of Inter's shares.

Speculation has suggested that Moratti's move may have come as a result of a row with coach Walter Mazzarri, whom he appointed prior to Thorir's takeover.

Last weekend, Moratti warned the former Napoli coach that his job was under threat if results did not improve -- comments contrasting with those made by Thorir, who backed him.

On Wednesday, Mazzarri declined to comment on what Moratti had said, saying only that he was focusing on Inter's next match.
