The Garrone family's 12-year ownership of Serie A club Sampdoria ended this Thursday with the sale of the Blucerchiati to film producer Massimo Ferrero.
Twelve million euros was paid on Thursday morning in a move which could pave the way to a return of Antonio Cassano to the club this summer.
Italy international Cassano left the club in acrimonious circumstances in 2011 after refusing to attend a charity event with former president, the late Riccardo Garrone.
The Parma forward has repeatedly vowed to return to the club one day.
Edoardo Garrone, who took control following his father's death in January 2013, announced on Thursday that he felt he was passing the club into safe hands.
"I had two objectives: to ensure the club's financial security, and then to pass it on," he said at a news conference in Genoa. "Now, Sampdoria is solid, serious and transparent."
Garrone revealed that numerous offers down the years had been turned down for the Genovese club.
"None of them were credible," he said. "Then, just a short while ago, I was contacted with great discretion by an Italian businessman, Massimo Ferrero. He showed me how serious and pragmatic he was, and that convinced me he would do well. This morning, after various board meetings, we completed the sale.
"In 12 years with Sampdoria, I am proud to say that the club has been saved twice: first when my father bought it, and then after relegation to Serie B. These have been years filled with sacrifices, disappointments, and also satisfactions."
Ferrero is now set to take the club forwards, placing his faith in current coach Sinisa Mihajlovic and could look to bring Cassano to the club.
"Cassano? Why not," he added. "In any case, even if we don't get him, we will get somebody else. I am interested both in business and the spectacle because both need to go hand in hand.
"I only want to win," continued the 62-year-old. "Mihajlovic is the number one in his role and I'm a big fan of his. I'm honoured to wear these colours and I would like to thank the Garrone family for this opportunity."
