Mancini led the Nerazzurri to the Serie A title in three consecutive campaigns between 2006 and 2008, before taking charge of Manchester City.

The Italian is currently at Galatasaray, but Cuper, who coached Inter between 2001 and 2003, told La Gazzetta dello Sport that Mancini is not happy with life in Turkey.

"Inter are ready to ask him back," Cuper, who left his job at Al Wasl last month, said. "He's unhappy at Galatasaray and would like to return to Italy. The Nerazzurri know this and that's why they've started talking with him. They could even make a formal offer to him soon."

Current Inter coach Walter Mazzarri has come under fire for failing to guide Inter -- who finished ninth last season -- into contention for a place in next term’s Champions League.

Although president Erick Thohir says he is planning the future with the former Napoli coach in charge, he has also warned that Mazzarri, like everybody at the club, is under scrutiny.

Inter are currently fifth in the table, but under pressure from a host of clubs in the hunt for a place in the Europa League -- their minimum objective for the season.

"This maybe isn't the best of times for us, but we've got what it takes to get out of it and earn a place in the Europa League," Inter full-back Danilo D'Ambrosio told Sky Sport Italia, adding that Mazzarri was one of the main reasons he joined the club.

"I know that he's a great coach when it comes to getting the best out of wide players, so I knew I would get the chance to improve under him."

Indonesian businessman Thohir is back in Milan again this weekend and will take in Inter's clash with Bologna at the San Siro on Saturday night.
