Carlo Tavecchio: Coppa Italia final date does not help Italy coach Conte

Italian Football Association president Carlo Tavecchio has accused the Serie A authorities of undermining Italy coach Antonio Conte by scheduling the final of the Coppa Italia for a week after the end of the league season.

Conte is reported to be furious at the decision to play the cup final on May 21 or 22, with the date dependent on whether one of the teams is also involved in the Europa League final.

He had been hoping to have his Euro 2016 squad assembled by that stage, but is now likely to have to welcome some of his players direct from the cup final without any rest.

"It's not possible that, particularly around European Championships and World Cups, the national team's activities get seconded to those of the clubs," La Gazzetta dello Sport quoted Tavecchio as saying.

"It [the national team] must not be subjugated. I'm trying to work out what we could do about the date of the Coppa Italia.

"I still hope to sort things out with the clubs who reach the final to meet the needs of the national team coach. The only thing for certain is that the national team's activities will go ahead as planned."

Conte has often hit out at a lack of collaboration between clubs and the international team, and is expected to cancel a planned three-day training get-together next month in protest.

The former Juventus coach is also stalling over signing a new contract beyond the end of Euro 2016, when he is expected to seek a return to club football.
