Coppa Italia: Inter beat Cagliari; Genoa stunned by third-tier Alessandria

Inter Milan produced a composed display to defeat Cagliari 3-0 at home and book their place in the Coppa Italia quarterfinals.

The Serie A leaders coasted after Rodrigo Palacio scored in the 24th minute to end his 11-game goal drought

Marcelo Brozovic and Ivan Perisic added second-half goals to complete a comfortable evening's work at the San Siro.

Inter will play either Napoli or Verona for a place in the semifinals.

In Tuesday's other game, third-tier Alessandria pulled off a shock 2-1 win at Genoa in extra time.

The Piedmont club became the first side from Italy's Lega Pro to reach the last eight of the knockout cup competition for 32 years.

Alessandria, who had already sent Palermo out in the earlier rounds, took the lead at the start of the second half through Manuel Marras.

The Lega Pro side were forced to play out the closing stages with only 10 men following injury to Gianni Manfrin when all the substitutes had been used, and the Serie A side took advantage to conjure a stoppage-time equaliser through Leonardo Pavoletti.

However, the home side were not to be denied a famous victory as with 114 minutes on the clock, Riccardo Bocalon rolled in a dramatic winner.

Alessandria will face the winner of the tie between Roma and Spezia, which is to be played on Wednesday.
