Napoli ultra Gennaro De Tommaso under house arrest for part in violence

The Napoli fan who decided last May's Coppa Italia final would go ahead is under house arrest for his part in the scenes which overshadowed the match.

The face of Gennaro De Tommaso sitting on a fence discussing with Napoli captain Marek Hamsek before the delayed kick-off of the final, won by the Azzurri against Fiorentina, was the main image of the May 3 final at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

It was only after De Tommaso, known as Genny 'a carogna, negotiated with Hamsik that the game was allowed to go ahead after violent clashes outside the ground had led to the hospitalisation of one Napoli fan, Ciro Esposito, who died as a result of his injuries a few months later.

Police investigating Esposito's death have now arrested De Tommaso and four other Napoli fans, who they believe were the instigators of the violence outside the stadium. Esposito was shot several times by Daniele De Santis, a Roma fan involved in the clashes.

Closed circuit television pictures showed De Tommaso leading a group of around 100 other Napoli fans in the area where Esposito was shot dead. He has been arrested for resisting a functionary, wearing a shirt which incited violence or is insulting, throwing dangerous items at police and climbing over the barriers inside the stadium.

There is not yet a proven link between De Tommaso and Esposito's death, however.

According to ilfattoquotidiano.it, De Tommaso had his driving licence revoked a month ago for driving on the emergency lane of the motorway near Catania.

There, he had been visiting the family of the jailed Catania fan Antonino Spaziale, who shot and killed the police officer Filippo Raciti ahead of a Sicilian derby with Palermo in 2007. The shirt De Tommaso was wearing during the cup final called for him to be freed from jail.
