Spalletti out at Inter Milan as Conte nears job

Inter Milan have parted company with Luciano Spalletti after two seasons as their head coach, with former Juventus, Italy and Chelsea manager Antonio Conte favourite to take over.

"FC Internazionale Milano can confirm that Luciano Spalletti is no longer Head Coach of the First Team," a club statement reads. "The Club wishes to thank Spalletti for his work and the results achieved together."

Former Roma coach Spalletti guided the Nerazzurri into the Champions League for the first time in seven seasons at the end of his first year at the helm and extended his contract through to the summer of 2021.

They failed to get through the group stage, however, drawing 1-1 at home to PSV Eindhoven in their final group game to allow Tottenham Hotspur to qualify together with Barcelona. Inter were eliminated from the Europa League by Eintracht Frankfurt in the round of 16.

In Serie A, they managed to secure fourth spot on the final day of the season thanks to a 2-1 win over Empoli, qualifying for the Champions League for a second season running.

However, Spalletti has not been able to convince club bosses that he can take the club any further and has now been relieved of his duties.

If Conte is appointed, he will be reunited with former Juve general manager Beppe Marotta, who assumed a similar role at Inter in December.
