Arrests made after fans clash in Lodz ahead of Polish league derby

More than 20 people were arrested when fans clashed with police in Poland after being denied entry to a match between rival teams in the city of Lodz on Sunday.

There were no reports of injuries after the clashes, which happened ahead of an afternoon match between LKS Lodz and Widzew Lodz. The game ended 2-2.

Police had banned Widzew fans from entering the LKS stadium for security reasons, prompting a group of about 300 to protest in the city centre.

After a police appeal for them to go home, some fans instead headed to the stadium and threw bottles, firecrackers and flares at police.

Authorities in Lodz said officers then used batons, tear gas and stun grenades on the fans.

The clashes followed similar violence in the city of Katowice the day before.
