Former Arsenal double-winning defender John Roberts dies aged 69

Former Arsenal defender John Roberts, who helped the team win the league and cup double in 1971, has died aged 69.

Arsenal confirmed on their official website on Monday: "Everyone at Arsenal Football Club was saddened to hear of the death of John Roberts, aged 69. The thoughts of everyone at Arsenal are with John's family and friends."

The club did not provide any details about the cause of death. Roberts joined Arsenal from Northampton Town in April 1969 and made 18 appearances in the 1970-71 season, when the Gunners won the league and FA Cup.

Roberts was born in Abercynon, Wales, and worked as a railway fireman before becoming a professional footballer with Swansea in 1964. After three seasons at Arsenal, he joined Birmingham in 1972 and went on to have stints with Wrexham and Hull as well.

He made 22 appearances for Wales.

Wrexham wrote on their website: "Everyone at the Racecourse would like to pass on their sympathies to John's family and friends at this sad time."
