Theo Walcott can lead England attack to Euro 2016 - Oxlade-Chamberlain

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has backed Arsenal teammate Theo Walcott to help fire England to Euro 2016.

Oxlade-Chamberlain, 22, believes Walcott has proved he can lead the Three Lions' front line as they prepare to reach the tournament in France next year.

England travel to San Marino on Saturday before hosting Switzerland in Group E on Tuesday, with Roy Hodgson's side on the brink of qualification.

Walcott has been called up as one of the four strikers and is yet to score this season, but wants to play up front for the Gunners.

And, while the country waits for Wayne Rooney to break Bobby Charlton's goalscoring record, Oxlade-Chamberlain believes Walcott can shine up front for England.

"I think Theo has been ready for a number of years to play there. He's someone I look up to and admire as a person and a player," he said.

"His form for club and country in his long career proves why he is ready, his goalscoring record proves why he is ready to play up front.

"He is a great player and poses different threats than other strikers with his ability to run in behind. I have no doubt Theo can play up front -- or in midfield as well."

Walcott could partner Rooney with the Manchester United striker two goals away from becoming England's all-time leading scorer.

Oxlade-Chamberlain said: "It's almost gone under the radar within the camp really, our main focus has been the team and the San Marino game and then the game on Tuesday.

"I wouldn't put it past him to break it on Saturday -- whenever he makes that achievement he has been an amazing player for England for so many years."

Oxlade-Chamberlain has not played for England since scoring in a 3-1 win in Scotland last November and knows he must show his worth to return to Hodgson's side.

"I don't think there's any guaranteed starters so whenever you meet up with England you have to prove yourself again," he added.
