Portugal coach Fernando Santos said that his strategy "decided the match" as his team beat Serbia 2-1 in the 2016 European Qualifiers Group I. (1:27)

Portugal coach Fernando Santos believes his side were distracted as they fell to a shock 2-0 home defeat to Cape Verde Islands in Tuesday's friendly.

Santos fielded an entirely different starting XI to that which beat Serbia 2-1 in their Euro 2016 qualifier on Sunday, with Cristiano Ronaldo left out.

And Cape Verde Islands made them pay as first-half goals from Odair Fortes and Gege sealed a surprise win for the visitors at the Estadio Antonio Coimbra da Mota.

Portugal's misery was compounded when defender Andre Pinto was sent off on the hour mark for a foul on Heldon, and Santos told O Jogo: "There were more positives than negatives, but some things were missing. We didn't move the ball. the team was OK but we weren't aggressive.

"In those 10 minutes of the first half, we looked distracted or something and at this level of competition you pay dearly for that.

"Our attitude in the second half was stronger. Even with 10 men, the team was tough and continued attacking. The subs refreshed the team and they kept up the attack.

"We knew they [Cape Verde] were motivated. Matches with rival teams who speak Portuguese are always that way. We are technically on point, but we lack the rest.

"The team will develop naturally. There are players who could be added, but I am not going to name names."

Andre Andre made his debut for Portugal as a second-half substitute, and added: "I'm very happy to have made my debut. Despite the defeat, there were positive aspects to take away from this game and also we only had a few days to prepare.

"We gave our best. Fernando Santos told us not to be nervous and we wanted to win the match."

Cape Verde Islands are ranked 38th in FIFA's world rankings compared to Portugal in seventh.

Portugal are top of their Euro 2016 qualifying Group I with Santos' side two points clear after four games.
