Eder never considered Brazil call-up; honoured to play for Italy, says father

Pelle to start against England (1:39)

Graziano Pelle will start up front for Italy against the country where he plays his football, England, following Antonio Conte's team selection. (1:39)

Italy's newest international forward Eder never thought for one second about representing Brazil, according to his father.

Eder, 28, picked up his first cap for the Azzurri in Friday's 2-2 draw with Bulgaria, scoring the equalising goal after coming on as a substitute.

That appearance means the Brazilian-born player will now only be eligible to represent Italy, while Selecao coach Dunga has since said that he was considering handing the Sampdoria striker a call-up.

But Eder's father said the player -- who will lead the line in Tuesday's friendly against England -- would never have wanted it any other way.

"I was delighted when I heard about his call-up," Eloi Martins told Uol Esporte. "Then again, who would not be honoured to play for Italy? He never considered the Selecao.

"He moved [to Italy] when he was very young -- 10 years ago -- after two seasons with Criciuma.

"He was educated and grew up in Italy. He's always been happy there and he feels at home there now."

Although born in Brazil, Eder qualified for Italian citizenship due to having a great-grandfather from Veneto.

He would nevertheless be eligible for an Italian passport now having spent a decade in Italy since arriving from Brazil as an 18-year-old.

Back in Brazil, none of his friends or relatives feel betrayed by his decision to accept Antonio Conte's call-up.

"He had the whole city supporting him," said his father. "Saturday's goal was an indescribable joy because he was so desperate to do well.

"Before the game, he promised me he would give everything and I'm delighted he was able to score such an important goal."
