Asia ends 2014 without single top-50 nation in FIFA world rankings

FIFA's latest rankings show that Asia ended 2014 without a single nation in the top 50 teams.

The continent endured a difficult calendar year on the pitch, with Iran, South Korea, Australia and Japan all finishing bottom of their World Cup groups at last summer's tournament in Brazil.

None of the quartet managed a single win in Brazil, with Carlos Queiroz's Iran side finishing the highest of Asia's sides in the FIFA rankings in 51st place.

Japan took 54th place with South Korea following in 69th, while World Cup holders Germany top the rankings followed by finalists Argentina and Colombia in second and third respectively.

There was no movement among the top 45 teams.

Brazil ended the year in sixth place after losing in the semifinals 7-1 on home soil to eventual winners Die Nationalmannschaft, while Costa Rica's impressive tournament saw them finish as CONCACAF's highest-placed nation in 16th.

Algeria were Africa's highest-placed nation in 18th ahead of the African Nations Cup, which is due to kick off later in January.
