Timothy Fosu-Mensah gets first Netherlands call ahead of friendlies

Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah has been called into the provisional Netherlands squad for their upcoming friendlies against Republic of Ireland, Poland and Austria.

Fosu-Mensah, 18, has already represented the nation at under-19 level but now will get the chance to prove his worth with the senior squad after making his Premier League debut in February.

Netherlands, who failed to qualify for Euro 2016, have also included two U21 midfielders, Feyenoord's Tonny Vilhena and Utrecht's Bart Ramselaar, as they begin their preparations for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Coach Danny Blind has opted to leave Schalke striker Klass-Jan Huntelaar, 32, out of the squad as well as Fenerbahce's Robin van Persie, also 32.

Bayern Munich star Arjen Robben and Galatasaray midfielder Wesley Sneijder are both absent through injury.

Netherlands take on Republic of Ireland on May 27, Poland on June 1 and Austria on June 4.
