Antonio Conte says national team doors open for Mario Balotelli

After less-than-impressive showings from both England and Italy in their 1-1 draw, Antonio Conte said the doors were open to players like Mario Balotelli and Sebastian Giovinco to return to the national team if they are able to perform for their club teams.

Balotelli, Giovinco and Daniel Osvaldo were all left out of the Italian squad for their friendly against Roy Hodgson and England. But Conte pointed out in his post-match press conference that it doesn't mean those players won't have chances in the future.

"I'm keeping an eye on everything the leagues offer," said Conte. "I went to see Southampton-Liverpool and only [Graziano] Pelle played, as Balotelli and Fabio Borini were on the bench."

Giovinco joined Toronto FC for the start of Major League Soccer's season, while Osvaldo is on loan at Boca Juniors.

Pelle was in the squad to face England, scoring Italy's lone goal on a header in the 29th minute.

"The doors of the Nazionale are open to everyone who shows during their performances that they know what the Italy jersey represents and what it requires," Conte said.

"I hope Balotelli can give Liverpool significant support and play more often. If this should happen, then the doors are open for the Nazionale.

Balotelli has made several appearances for Liverpool of late, including a substitute cameo in the their 2-1 loss to Manchester United. However, the Italian has not been a regular member or contributor to Brendan Rodgers' side.

Conte went on to say that he'd also welcome Borini and Giovinco back to the team if they showed the form needed to pull on the Italian jersey for international competition.

"We need these players to send us important messages and we will be ready to receive them."

Mirko Valdifiori was making his debut and set a perfect example for those trying to get into the squad for the first time or make a return, according to Conte.

The Italian boss hailed the Empoli player's work rate and complimented him for pulling off the impressive performance against a top side like England.

"It's a shame, as we had several chances against a very strong side like England. I am happy because I had the chance to see players work for 65 or 90 minutes, like Valdifiori's debut," Conte said.

"Valdifiori is the perfect example. I don't look at their curriculum; I look at who is doing well. Valdifiori deserved this call and deserves compliments for his performance, especially as it was his debut against England.

"Pelle, Eder and Franco Vazquez all did well. Everyone honoured the Azzurri jersey tonight."
