Nigeria angry as Bolivia pull out of friendly amid Boko Haram fears

A friendly between Bolivia and Nigeria was cancelled after the Bolivian football federation asked for the match, scheduled to be played on March 26, to be postponed because of the internal conflict in the African nation.

Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, federation president Carlos Chavez specifically mentioned extremist group Boko Haram as a concern.

In response, Nigeria said Bolivia "chickened out" and that their "excuses" for calling off the friendly this month "do not hold any water."

Bolivia "chickened out at the eleventh hour despite signing a contract with the NFF and sending a list of its delegation for visa on arrival," the Nigeria Football Federation said.

The federation issued a statement on Tuesday in which it said it was seeking the postponement to "preserve the physical integrity of the players, coaching staff" and others who would travel.

Boko Haram's six-year insurgency has claimed thousands of lives, and the group recently declared allegiance to Islamic State.

Nigeria will play Uganda on March 25 instead.

Nigeria "have assured us of good hospitality, and security as well, and we don't expect any problems,'' Ugandan Football Association spokesman Ahmed Hussein said.
