Manchester City have been handed an injury worry ahead of a defining week in their season as captain Vincent Kompany was sent for a scan on a suspected calf problem.

The centre-back, who was preparing for Belgium's internationals against Australia and Israel, was due to skipper his country.

But Belgium manager Marc Wilmots revealed on Twitter that Kompany, would miss training because of the scan.

"No Vincent Kompany at training today," he tweeted. "At the hospital with the doctor for a calf scan. We await the result."

City face Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Chelsea in the space of eight days after the international break and Kompany has a record of suffering calf problems.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini's biggest summer signing was a centre-back, the 32 million-pound Frenchman Eliaquim Mangala, but he is yet to feature.

And if Kompany is sidelined, the former Porto player could make his debut in one of the most demanding fixtures of the season.

City also still have Matija Nastasic, despite receiving multiple inquiries for the Serbian central defender on deadline day, but he has fallen out of favour with Pellegrini.
