The BVB striker suffered a knee injury during preparation for the game against Gordon Strachan’s side at National Stadium in Warsaw.
Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc had earlier told RN that Lewandowski was set to miss the game, saying: "It is true that Lewandowski will return to Dortmund."
The Polish online outlet Przeglad Sportowy reported that Lewandowski stretched his anterior cruciate ligament, and quoted the Poland team doctor as saying: “I advised the Dortmund team doctor to rest him in the match at Freiburg on Sunday. The risk of suffering a severe injury is high.”

Zorc said that the 25-year-old could have damaged his knee, and Dortmund have confirmed that Lewandowski’s knee will be examined by club doctor Markus Braun on Wednesday.
The future Bayern Munich attacker has featured in every match for Juergen Klopp’s side during the 2013-14 campaign, and currently tops the Bundesliga scoring charts with 15 goals.
Dortmund, who sit second in Bundesliga, are already without Ilkay Gundogan, Neven Subotic and Jakub Blaszczykowski, and will have to continue picking up points despite their injury concerns in order to guarantee Champions League football next season.
While Gundogan has been sidelined with a back injury since last August, Subotic and Blasczykowski both suffered ACL tears during the season.
