NorthEast United sign Ghana star Asomah Gyan

NorthEast United FC have signed Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan for the 2019-20 ISL season. Gyan, Ghana's all-time leading scorer with 51 goals, will join NorthEast on the back of their most successful season, where they reached the play-offs for the very first time.

Gyan, 33, rose to fame with his performances on the international stage, particularly during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where his three goals helped Ghana to the quarterfinals, the team's best ever finish; he was eventually named the BBC's African Footballer of the Year. Overall, Gyan represented Ghana in three World Cups, and with six strikes, is Africa's highest ever goalscorer in the tournament.

Gyan also made 31 appearances in the African Cup of Nations, his eight goals leading the team to runners-up finishes in 2010 and 2015.

At club level, Gyan began his professional career with Udinese, who loaned him out to Serie B side Modena in 2004. He scored more than 25 goals during his stay in Italy, subsequently earning him a move to Rennes in 2008, and Sunderland in 2010.

Over the next few years, Gyan went on to represent various clubs in Asia, including Al-Ain FC, Shangai SIPG and Al-Ahli Dubai Club. His stint with Al-Ain was particularly fruitful, as he netted 60 times for the club in just 66 appearances. Gyan last played for Turkish club Kayserispor, whom he joined in 2017.

"I am extremely excited to start this new chapter in my career," Gyan said. "I have heard great things about NorthEast United FC and the Indian Super League and I am thrilled to be a part of it for the upcoming season. I am confident that we can better the wonderful season the club had last year."
