New venues, missing titans, wins on debut: ISL playoffs in numbers

The Indian Super League (ISL) semifinals are sure to be a competitive affair, with former winners Atletico de Kolkata taking on Mumbai City FC and an attack-minded Delhi Dynamos facing Kerala Blasters FC.

ESPN takes a look at some of the big numbers from the previous two seasons:

23

The number of goals scored in ISL playoffs thus far. Chennaiyin FC have been the greatest contributor to goals scored in ISL playoffs, with 10 goals scored in five games.

5

Five teams have played matches in the playoffs of the ISL. While Chennaiyin FC, FC Goa and Atletico de Kolkata have all played five of these matches each, there have been three appearances by Kerala Blasters FC, and two for Delhi Dynamos FC. Mumbai City FC will become the sixth team to make the ISL playoffs, leaving NorthEast United and FC Pune City as the only teams to have never made it to this stage.

411

The number of minutes of ISL playoffs that Edel Bete went before conceding a goal for the first time. Bete turned out for Atletico de Kolkata in the first year, and Chennaiyin FC in the second, and only conceded in the 21st minute of the fourth game he was playing. He won the ISL title with both his teams, but misses out on the playoffs with his new team FC Pune City this season. Interestingly, Amrinder Singh is on a 360-minute streak of not having conceded in his playing time for Mumbai City FC in 2016.

8

The venue with the most goals scored in ISL playoffs is the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, Goa. This tally has swelled gradually across three matches - there were no goals scored when Atletico de Kolkata faced FC Goa in 2014, then three when FC Goa beat Delhi Dynamos in the semi-final of 2015. The five goals scored in the 2015 final are the most in an ISL playoff match. The highest and second-highest scoring venue in ISL playoff history - Nehru Stadium, Chennai with four goals - will both be missing in action this year.

7

The total number of ISL playoffs venues thus far. These include two neutral venues - the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai that hosted the 2014 final between Atletico de Kolkata and Kerala Blasters, and the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi, Pune that was used as a 'home' venue for Chennaiyin FC's semi-final against Atletico de Kolkata last year due to the floods in Chennai. There will be two new venues added in 2016 - with both Kolkata and Mumbai using new stadiums for the season.

Delhi Dynamos are both the lowest-scoring team in ISL playoffs, as also the team whose home venue has seen just one goal at this stage of the competition. That goal was scored by Robin Singh, who misses out on his second appearance in the playoffs after the elimination of FC Goa.

2

Kerala Blasters and Delhi Dynamos are the only two teams to have won on ISL playoffs debut. While Kerala beat Chennaiyin FC 3-0 in Kochi in 2014, Delhi overcame FC Goa 1-0. The most successful team in playoffs history remains Chennaiyin FC, though, with their three wins placing them ahead of Kolkata (two wins), Kerala, Delhi and Goa (one playoff match win apiece).
