Federation Cup semi-final scenarios explained

Following Chennai City's 3-1 win over Churchill Brothers, Aizawl FC and East Bengal have confirmed their place in the last four of the Federation Cup 2017. Which two teams will join them? Here's a ready reckoner

Group A (updated before the last league match)

Aizawl FC - 2 wins, 6 points (Through to the semi-finals)

East Bengal - 1 win, 1 draw, 4 points (Through to the semi-finals)

Chennai City - 1 win, 3 points (Eliminated)

Churchill Brothers - 1 draw, 1 loss, 1 point (Eliminated)

Fixture remaining: Aizawl vs. East Bengal

Criteria to decide the winners: Points, head-to-head, goal difference (GD), number of goals scored.

Group B

Mohun Bagan - 2 wins, 6 points (GD +5)

BFC - 1 win, 3 points (GD -1)

DSK Shivajians - 1 win, 3 points (GD -2)

Shillong Lajong - 2 losses, 0 point (GD -2)

Fixtures remaining: DSK Shivajians vs Shillong Lajong FC, Mohun Bagan Vs Bengaluru FC

Criteria to decide the winners: Points, head-to-head, goal difference (GD), number of goals scored, draw of lots.

Group B doesn't have any team qualified or eliminated from itself as of now; Mohun Bagan lead the table with six points and a goal difference of +5 and Shillong Lajong are at the bottom, with no points and a goal difference of -2.

Mohun Bagan need a draw to make certain of the semis; they will be unreachable on seven points. They could even lose to Bengaluru FC in their last game if other results go their way.

DSK Shivajians and Bengaluru are currently tied on three points but Shivajians are ahead on head-to-head by virtue of beating Bengaluru 2-0 on Wednesday. If both win their matches it will leave three teams on six points and will boil down to goal difference, where Bengaluru have the edge over Shivajians. If both teams draw it comes to head to head and Shivajians will go through.

For Lajong to go through to the last four, any margin of victory over Shivajians would suffice, as long as Bengaluru are also beaten by Mohun Bagan. It would improve Lajong's goal difference to a minimum of -1, which would then be superior to both DSK Shivajians and Bengaluru FC.
