East Bengal defender Anwar Ali suffers heart attack

East Bengal defender Anwar Ali suffered a heart attack after practice in Kolkata, and was admitted to a hospital, where he is reported to be stable, on Tuesday.

A club source revealed that Anwar, 32, complained of a pain in his chest soon after completing practice. "He suffered an ischemic attack of the interior valve, which caused the pain. He has been admitted to hospital and his angiogram has been done and luckily there is no blockage," East Bengal assistant general secretary Santi Ranjan Dasgupta told ESPN. "He has been given medicines and he is doing better now."

Anwar, who plays for Mumbai City FC in the ISL, has also been capped by India 33 times.

East Bengal, who will wind up their I-League campaign with an away match against Mumbai FC at the Cooperage on April 29, have had particularly odd luck with injuries to players and staff in the last week or so.

Mridul Banerjee, appointed interim coach in place of Englishman Trevor Morgan following East Bengal's fourth-consecutive defeat to DSK Shivajians, a loss that ended their title hopes, tore a ligament in his ankle during the first training session under him and could not be in the dugout for the 3-1 win over Minerva Punjab last weekend. Ranjan Chowdhury had to perform the role of coach for the three-time national champions' penultimate match of the I-League season.
