Trevor Morgan resigns as East Bengal coach

East Bengal head coach Trevor Morgan has resigned from his post after the team's title hopes ended on Sunday following a 1-0 defeat to DSK Shivajians.

"We have received a mail from Morgan this evening. He wants to go back home and does not want to continue till the Federation Cup," East Bengal's football secretary Santosh Bhattacharya said. "It's too late today to arrive at a decision. We will have a meeting with him tomorrow to finalise things."

The defeat against Shivajians was East Bengal's fourth consecutive loss in the league, mathematically ending their title hopes and leaving them third behind Mohun Bagan and Aizawl FC.

Morgan has been coach of East Bengal since the start of the season after being with the club for three years previously from 2010 to 2013. He was coach of Dempo last season, but following their pull-out of the league, Morgan signed with East Bengal.

Following a derby defeat against Mohun Bagan last week, fans had laid siege to the stadium demanding Morgan's ouster.

The club responded by sacking Morgan's deputy Warren Hackett and goalkeeping coach Abhijit Mondal, but gave the head coach a lifeline till Federation Cup.
