I-League's two-horse title race explained

With just a two more rounds to go, the I-League title is very much up for grabs. It's Aizawl and Mohun Bagan that are fighting for the trophy going into this weekend.

Mohun Bagan and Aizawl are on 33 points, and following East Bengal's defeat at the hands of DSK Shivajians, it means the 2017 I-League title will be decided between these two teams, who play each other next week on April 22.

The factors that break the deadlock between teams are the head-to-head between the teams, followed by the goal difference in the games between the teams, followed by the goals scored in those games, followed by overall goal difference.

So with next week's game in mind, what does each team need to do? Here are all the permutations and combinations that will decide the champions this season.

If Aizawl win

If Mohun Bagan lose the next game to Aizawl, they must ensure they do not lose it by a margin of two goals or more. If that happens, then Aizawl will be crowned champions irrespective of what happens in the final round (Aizawl will have 36, and the best Bagan can get up to will be 36, but trail them on head-to-head goal difference).

If Bagan win

If Mohun Bagan win the next game, they will claim the title. Margin will not matter in this case, as they won their previous meeting 3-2 in Kolkata.

If the game is a draw

If the match is a draw, then Mohun Bagan can win the title by winning their last match at home to Chennai City - who are in the bottom half of the table. They will be ahead of Aizawl head-to-head and on goal difference.

Essentially, the title race will stay alive till the final day, unless Aizawl win by two goals or more or lose to Mohun Bagan on April 22.
