Aaron Mooy: 'Unreal' Huddersfield Town fans helped me to be a success

Australia star Aaron Mooy has credited the "unreal" fans of recently promoted Premier League side Huddersfield Town for his meteoric rise to prominence on the international stage.

Mooy, 26, joined Huddersfield on loan from Manchester City at the beginning of last season and blossomed into one of the Championship's most talented midfielders, playing a pivotal role in the club's historic promotion to the English top flight.

Speaking to ESPN in Melbourne ahead of Australia's friendly against Brazil on Tuesday, Mooy said it was the generous and welcoming Huddersfield fans that really helped him find his feet when he first arrived at the club.

"Right from the start they backed me and believed in me," Mooy told ESPN. "When you start at a new club that's what you want from the fans and sometimes it's what you need. I loved playing in front of them all season long. Always big crowds and a great atmosphere, it was terrific."

Not only did Mooy help Huddersfield earn promotion, but he was also named in the Championship and EFL Team of the Season. His impressive year also caught the eye of City boss Pep Guardiola, who may look to bring him back for the 2017-18 campaign in a bid to bolster the club's midfield.

However, there will be fierce competition coming from Huddersfield manager David Wagner, who in his mind sees Mooy as "the heart" of the club. It has been reported that Wagner is willing to shell out in excess of £12 million to keep him at the Kirklees Stadium.

While Mooy says he is "still not sure" as to where he will be playing next season, he is thrilled to have helped end Huddersfield's 45-year top-flight drought and play a part in English football history.

"I will remember this season forever," Mooy said. "It was a massive achievement for one of the smaller clubs in the division and nobody really expected it. I am really proud."
