Huddersfield boss David Wagner: No Wembley advice from Jurgen Klopp

Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner joked that he had not asked Jurgen Klopp for advice about playing at Wembley because of the Liverpool manager's poor record at the stadium.

Huddersfield take on Reading in the Championship playoff final at the national stadium on Monday, with a place in the Premier League at stake.

Wagner, who coached Borussia Dortmund II until he took charge of Huddersfield in November 2015, is a close friend of Klopp's and was best man at his wedding.

Klopp's Dortmund lost the 2013 Champions League final to Bayern Munich at Wembley, while his Liverpool were defeated on penalties by Manchester City in the 2016 League Cup final.

Asked whether he had called Klopp for tips on playing there, Wagner laughed and said: "No, because he wasn't successful.

"We haven't spoken about Wembley. We spoke after the playoff semifinal [win over Sheffield Wednesday] and I know he supports us for the final.

"Even I, as a German, know how big Wembley is. When compared with the Maracana, it is probably the most traditional, biggest, greatest stadium where you can be involved as a footballer and a manager.

"And now we have a competitive football match, and this is excitement enough to be ready for this game."

Wagner said he believed neutral fans would be supporting Huddersfield -- nicknamed The Terriers -- who were tipped to struggle at the start of the season but defied those predictions to finish fifth.

"We are the small dog," he told The Yorkshire Post. "That never changes, even though Huddersfield Town are in the final.

"I have a feeling that nearly everyone -- not just in this town but also in Europe -- hopes this fairytale comes to a happy end."
