Houston Dynamo keeper Tyler Deric charged with misdemeanor assault

MLS suspended Houston Dynamo starting goalkeeper Tyler Deric on Wednesday following his arrest in an alleged domestic violence incident.

Deric, who was named MLS Player of the Month last week, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault of a family member on Tuesday night.

The 29-year-old was released from custody after posting $1,000 bond, and is due in court next Tuesday, according to the Houston Chronicle.

He will be banned from all team activities while MLS performs its own investigation into the alleged incident.

"Houston Dynamo goalkeeper Tyler Deric was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with misdemeanor assault in connection with an alleged domestic incident. Deric has been suspended pending investigations by MLS and the Houston Police Department," a league statement read.

"Major League Soccer will remain in close communication with the Houston Dynamo, local law enforcement, and the MLS Players Union during this investigation. MLS will not have further comment on this matter until the conclusion of the League's investigation."

Tyler Deric has been suspended from all team activities.

In a statement of their own, the Dynamo said they supported the league's decision.

"We take these matters very seriously and are working closely with Major League Soccer and local authorities," the club said. "We support the league's decision to suspend the player pending further investigation. The club will have no further comment until the investigation into this alleged incident is complete."

Deric was previously arrested in 2015 after being accused of assault by the same woman, but charges were not filed after she told police she made up details in that case.

Deric has spent his entire career with the Dynamo, who will travel to face the Portland Timbers in their Western Conference semifinal second leg on Sunday.

He received the league's top award for October after allowing just one goal in three games, helping the Dynamo secure a playoff spot. Deric then kept clean sheets in the knockout stage win over Sporting Kansas City, and again in the first leg against the Timbers, a goalless draw.

He is set to be replaced in the second leg by backup Joe Willis, who allowed 14 goals in eight games this season.
