Houston Dynamo appoint Wilmer Cabrera as new coach

The Houston Dynamo announced Wilmer Cabrera as their new head coach on Friday.

The former Chivas USA and U.S. under-17 coach Wilmer Cabrera replaces interim coach Wade Barrett, who took over from Owen Coyle in May.

"We are very pleased to welcome Wilmer Cabrera to the Houston Dynamo," said Dynamo general manager Matt Jordan. "His experience, work ethic and unique background, having coached at every level of soccer in this country, including the professional level and with the U.S. national team programs in player development, will greatly benefit our club as we move forward.

"I'm excited to begin working with him to put together the 2017 Houston Dynamo and build towards getting us back to where we all want to be."

The 49-year-old Cabrera posted a record of nine wins, six draws and 19 defeats in 2014, his lone year at Chivas and the club's last in MLS before being contracted at the end of that season.

Cabrera spent two years as an assistant with the Colorado Rapids before that, and helmed the U.S. U17s from 2007-12. He spent this past season as coach of Rio Grande Valley, Houston's USL affiliate.

"I am excited to join the Houston Dynamo. It's a great club with a great history, and I am ready for the challenge," Cabrera said. "I look forward to working with the ownership group, management, our staff and the players to return the Dynamo to the level that the club and our fans deserve and expect."
