Houston Dynamo set to announce Wilmer Cabrera as new coach - sources

Former Chivas USA and U.S. under-17 coach Wilmer Cabrera will be named the next head coach of the Houston Dynamo, sources confirmed to ESPN FC on Thursday.

FourFourTwo was the first to report the news that Cabrera, an ex-Colombian international who started three matches for Los Cafeteros at the 1998 World Cup in France, will get the job. He will be presented on Friday, one source said.

He replaces interim coach Wade Barrett, who took over from Owen Coyle in May, was not offered the position on a permanent basis, the Houston Chronicle and other outlets reported on Wednesday.

That revelation didn't sit well with at least one senior member of the Dynamo, as striker Will Bruin tweeted that passing on Barrett was a "very foolish" decision on the part of his employer:

Team president Chris Canetti told the Chronicle that he wants Barrett, who captained the Dynamo to MLS Cups in 2006 and '07, to remain with the organization.

The 49-year-old Cabrera posted a record of nine wins, six draws and 19 defeats in 2014, his lone year at Chivas and the club's last in MLS before being contracted at the end of that season.

Cabrera spent two years as an assistant with the Colorado Rapids before that, and helmed the U.S. U17s from 2007-12. He spent this past season as coach of Rio Grande Valley, Houston's USL affiliate.
