John Brooks to begin preseason with Hertha Berlin after knee injury

United States defender John Brooks has resumed training at Hertha Berlin after returning from the Copa America Centenario with a knee injury.

Brooks, 23, suffered the blow in the build-up to the United States' third-place playoff against Colombia last month.

Hertha feared Brooks -- one of their key players last term -- could miss crucial parts of the their preseason, but he was given the all-clear by the club's doctor after diagnosing a sprain in his left knee.

On Monday Brooks and Slovakia international Peter Pekarik joined Hertha, who began their preseason in late June and are set to play in the third-round of the Europa League qualifiers against Brondby or Hibernian on July 28 and Aug. 4.

However, Hertha coach Pal Dardai does not plan to field either Brooks or Pekarik in the home leg of the Europa League qualifier next week.

He told kicker: "Both will work hard in the next 14 days, they have to make up a lot of ground."

The duo will take part in a performance diagnostics test on Tuesday, and Dardai said the test will determine their training schemes for the next weeks.

"It will show how fit they are," he said. "We could face a lot of matches this season, and the body needs to be fully prepared."
