Hertha Berlin: John Brooks' Copa America plans 'unfortunate'

John Brooks is set to miss part of Hertha Berlin's preseason because of the 2016 Copa America, which precedes the club's return to Europe for the first time in seven years.

Brooks, 23, is currently preparing for the Copa with the United States team and hopes to win a place in the 23-man squad announced by coach Jurgen Klinsmann on May 20.

The U.S. will open the tournament against Colombia at Santa Clara on June 3, and their campaign could last until the final on June 27.

Hertha defender Brooks will go on a three-week holiday after the end of the United States' campaign and then return to club training.

The Bundesliga side begin their season in the third qualifying round for the 2016-2017 Europa League on July 28.

"The situation is a bit unfortunate," Hertha coach Pal Dardai told local tabloid BZ.

He cited the summer of 2015 when Brooks played at the Gold Cup for the United States, returned to Berlin late and was finally back in the first team on matchday 12.

"It's like last year, when John missed parts of the preseason because of the Gold Cup," Dardai added.

"I hope John returns in a top state, and then he'll play. If his fitness is not that great, he won't play. We've got a trusting relationship and talked about it already. He's in the know."
