Hellas Verona star Luca Toni could win Serie A Golden Boot award at age of 38

Luca Toni rose to the top of the Serie A goalscoring charts on Sunday two days short of his 38th birthday, breaking the 20-goal mark in a season for the sixth time in his career and setting his sights on a second Serie A golden boot award.

Two goals against Parma took Toni one ahead of Juventus' Carlos Tevez and Inter's Mauro Icardi as Serie A's current Capocannoniere to 21 goals.

Next weekend the 37-year-old -- who celebrates his birthday on Tuesday -- will come up against Juve and Tevez hoping to lift the individual award nine years collecting after his first.

"It would be really satisfying, both for me and for my teammates," the Hellas Verona forward said in quotes picked up by La Gazzetta dello Sport. "It's also down to them that I've scored 21 goals. I'm relaxed and just want to keep winning things.

"Sunday is our final game at home against Juve, one of the strongest sides in Europe -- in fact I want to wish them all the best of luck in the Champions League final."

Toni has netted 41 goals for the Gialloblu since returning to Italian football in the twilight of a career which already seemed to be some way down the final straight when he moved to Al-Nasr in 2012.

He bagged eight goals in the 2012-13 season back at Fiorentina, the club with whom he won his first top-scorer's award with 31 goals in 2005-06, while he finished as top scorer in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich with 24 in 2007-08.

Australian A-League side Adelaide United are interested in his signature, while there have even been suggestions he might return to the Italy national team -- though his coach Andrea Mandorlini believes that is unlikely.

"I think that might be a bit exaggerated -- [Toni is nearly] 38," he said. "But if he were to win the top-scorer's prize, then it would be an amazing achievement. When you have a player like Luca in your side, then you simply have to play for him."

Mandorlini might have him in his side for another season too with Toni reiterating last week that he plans to continue playing "for as long as I want to and can still make a difference," but added: "I don't want to be a burden."

Toni has been a vital player for Hellas as he almost single-handedly led the club to Serie A safety in 13th position, but said in March he will decide his future this summer while on holiday with his family.
