United States international Bobby Wood has been handed a three-match suspension and been fined by Hamburg after being sent off at the weekend.
Wood, 23, was sent off before the hour-mark of Hamburg's 3-0 loss for elbowing Cologne defender Dominique Heintz in the stomach after some shoving between the two while waiting for a free kick.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, coach Markus Gisdol said Wood's actions that got him sent off "inexcusable."
Wood also clashed with Cologne's Dominic Maroh in the game, and the centre-back will now miss the remainder of 2016 with a collarbone fracture.
The U.S. attacker jumped into the defender, who was only a couple of minutes into his comeback after breaking two ribs in the first Bundesliga match of the season against Darmstadt.
Maroh was withdrawn after only 12 minutes, and on Monday his club announced an examination showed that Maroh suffered a fractured collarbone.
Hamburg sit at the bottom of the league. They have won two points from nine games, and already replaced coach Bruno Labbadia with Gisdol. On Saturday, they host Borussia Dortmund, who are without a win in four league games.
BVB have lost three and drawn one in their last four matches at the Volksparkstadion, where they last took all three points in January 2012.
