Hamburg manager Peter Knabel OK with temporary role

Hamburg coach Peter Knabel says he does not mind if he is only keeping the seat warm for Thomas Tuchel, who has been linked with the Hamburg hotseat next season.

Knabel had been working as HSV's director of football until being asked to replace Josef Zinnbauer just over a week ago.

He is well aware that his task is to save the club from relegation and that beyond that, his future is likely to be back upstairs at the Bundesliga club, which is why the rumours circulating about Tuchel are not in the least distressing.

"I have absolutely no problem hearing talk of my successor," Knabel said at a news conference on Thursday.

"I can cope with that and I can even join the discussion -- it's not something which plays a role in my day-to-day duties.

"We all know that we have eight weeks together and there's nothing that will divert our attention.

"I'm pleased to hear of good coaches wanting to work at Hamburg."

Hamburg travel to Bayer Leverkusen this Saturday looking to end a run of six games without a win and move out of the bottom three of the Bundesliga.

Tuchel, who has been out of work since leaving Mainz last summer, is reportedly ready to return to coaching from the start of next season and Hamburg, as well as fellow strugglers Stuttgart, have been linked with him.
