Joe Zinnbauer given Hamburg contract until 2016

Hamburg have handed a permanent contract to coach Joe Zinnbauer, the club confirmed on Monday.

Former under-23 boss Zinnbauer took charge of the first team in September, succeeding Mirko Slomka, but was only handed a deal until further notice.

In his first six Bundesliga games, Hamburg recorded one win, two draws but also suffered three defeats. HSV are still in the relegation zone, but have moved up two places from bottom to 16th.

On Monday, two days after a 3-0 defeat at Hertha Berlin, Zinnbauer received a vote of confidence from the club, who rewarded his efforts to get the struggling side back on the track after a difficult 12 months with a contract until 2016.

"I am delighted that I am to carry on coaching the team. My intention is to bring a higher level of consistency into our performances," Zinnbauer told the club's official website.

Hamburg sporting director Peter Knabel said that the decision to prolong Zinnbauer's contract "is not just to do with the job he has done with the first team over the last six weeks, but far more his overall performance in the club over the past two months."

Knabel added: "Joe has shown that he is able to stabilise a team, bring them together as a unit and further develop them."

On Wednesday, Hamburg host Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal in a rematch of Zinnbauer's first game in charge of the club, when both sides drew 0-0 at the Imtech Arena.

"We have to show more aggression and do more with the ball going forward. You can always produce a good performance, especially against Bayern," Zinnbauer said.
