Rafael van der Vaart and Julian Green near Hamburg returns

Hamburg captain Rafael van der Vaart is set to return to team training, while U.S. winger Julian Green is also closing in on a comeback following his rib injury.

Hamburg have endured a poor start to the Bundesliga season, managing only points in their first six league games while they have not won a match in the top flight since April 2014.

Despite ending a goal drought in excess of 500 minutes on Sunday, the Bundesliga side suffered a 2-1 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt -- meaning new coach Joe Zinnbauer has only picked up one point from his first three games in the dugout.

This weekend, Hamburg travel to Borussia Dortmund as they hope to land their first three points of the season and for the first time since late August, captain Van der Vaart, 31, could be in the HSV squad.

The former Spurs man played in Hamburg's first two games of the season, but has been ruled out with calf problems ever since.

On Tuesday, the midfielder returned to training, and is set join up with his teammates for Wednesday's training session, HSV announced on their official website.

"Van der Vaart has time until the weekend to get the good form he had before his injury back on the pitch," Hamburger Morgenpost commented. "In the battle with Dortmund, who are also in a crisis, he is desperately needed to finally win the first match this season."

Meanwhile, Green, 19, also resumed team training on Monday. The Bayern Munich loanee was ruled for the defeats at Glabach and against Frankfurt with a rib injury, but could return to the Hamburg squad at the weekend.
