Guinea appoint Paul Put only days after Kenya exit

Paul Put has been named as the head coach of the Guinea national football team only 11 days after he resigned from his post as Kenya boss.

The Belgian manager was unveiled at a press conference on Friday and will succeed Kanfoy Bangoura, who was dismissed following Guinea's group-stage exit from the African Nations Championship in Morocco.

Put spent three months as Harambee Stars boss after being appointed in November, but quit his post last month despite having won the 2017 CECAFA Cup during the early weeks of his tenure.

The Football Kenya Federation cited "personal reasons" as the explanation for Put's exit.

The 61-year-old joins Guinea on a two-year deal and will bring a strong African pedigree to the post.

He notably guided unfancied Burkina Faso to the final of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa where they were defeated by Nigeria, and was previously head coach of The Gambia and Jordan.

He's also enjoyed stints with Algerian heavyweights USM Alger, as well as Lokeren, Lierse and Mouscron in his homeland.

Guinea will resume their 2019 Nations Cup qualifying campaign against the Central African Republic in September. Before that, Put will be charged with overseeing the Syli Nationale's friendly against Mauritania on March 23 in Nouakchott.
