Liga MX giants Chivas have appointed veteran Tomas Boy as the club's new head coach, the Guadalajara club announced on Wednesday.
Boy has previously managed Chivas' city rivals Atlas and comes into the club with the team down in 14th position in Liga MX and with minimal chance of making the 2019 Clausura playoffs.
"With a long career in Mexican football and full awareness of the situations and scenarios that sometimes have to be faced, Tomas Boy has experience of infusing self-esteem into his teams so they go out onto the playing field to give their all," read a statement from Chivas.
Chivas are set to be close to the bottom of Liga MX's relegation table starting from next season and Boy did help Atlas to avoid the drop on more than one occasion.
Boy replaces Paraguayan Jose Cardozo, who was sacked on March 31. Chivas lost 1-0 last Saturday at home to Lobos BUAP, meaning the side have just one point from their last six league games.
"I'm used to handling hot potatoes, teams that are fighting relegation," said Boy in his introductory press conference Wednesday afternoon in Guadalajara. "That's what we've come for: to take on the challenge."
"[People] can say what they want, they can accuse me of many things, but I come here to help," he added. "You can't say no to Chivas."
Chivas travel to Morelia on Saturday in what will be 66-year-old Boy's first game in charge.
The Mexico City native's last job was with Cruz Azul in 2016.
Boy has previously managed eight clubs in Mexico.
