Marcus Bignot named new Grimsby Town manager

Marcus Bignot has been appointed as the new Grimsby manager after agreeing a deal to leave Solihull Moors.

Bignot succeeds Paul Hurst after he left last month to take over at League One club Shrewsbury. Micky Moore, Bignot's assistant at the non-league club, has followed the 42-year-old to Blundell Park to take up the same role.

Following Hurst's departure, Grimsby have been led by caretaker boss Dave Moore who has overseen a goalless league draw at Yeovil and a 1-0 defeat at Bolton in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Bignot's last game as Solihull Moors boss was also in the FA Cup at the weekend as he saw them fight back from a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw and a replay against Yeovil at Huish Park.

After signing a six-month rolling contract with the Mariners, Bignot said: "Firstly, I would like to place on record my gratitude to the then-chairman of Solihull Moors Nigel Collins and present incumbent Trevor Stevens for both giving me my first managerial opportunity.

"I'd also like to extend that gratitude to the board and Mike Turl for allowing me to take a football team and go on to build a football club - I'm very proud of not only on the pitch but off it also.

"The six years I have spent at Solihull Moors have moulded me into the person I am today and I can honestly say The Moors will always have a genuine place in my heart.

"But now, looking to the future, I am delighted to be at Grimsby Town and I am excited by the project. This is not just a job.

"We've got a great squad of players and I am looking forward to getting to know and understand them. Today is an important day in terms of meeting the staff and players and putting my plans in place for the week."

Grimsby's first game under Bignot will be against Sheffield United at Blundell Park on Wednesday night in the Checkatrade Trophy before hosting Barnet in League Two on Saturday.
