Greece to restart Cup after fan violence to avoid FIFA ban

ATHENS, Greece -- Greece's government says it will lift a suspension of the country's cup competition, under the threat of an international ban by FIFA.

Deputy minister for sport Stavros Kontonis called off the Greek Cup last month following violence at a semifinal between PAOK and league champion Olympiakos.

But he was given until Friday by FIFA to reverse the decision or face a competition ban.

Kontonis said on Wednesday the government would lift suspension on Friday after receiving assurances that the Greek Football Federation will reform its rules and governance.

The reforms, Kontonis said, would allow for a more effective investigation into alleged corruption in the sport.
