UEFA bans Panathinaikos from European football for three seasons

Greece's oldest football club Panathinaikos have been banned from European competition for three seasons for failing to pay their debts, UEFA has announced.

The Athens-based club were given a suspended sentence by UEFA's Club Financial Control Body, the panel that oversees the governing body's financial fair play rules, in December and told they had until March 1 to settle their unpaid bills.

ATHENS, Greece -- Panathinaikos say long-delayed payments have been made to Michael Essien and two others in an effort to avoid losing nine points as the Greek club struggles with mounting debts and the threat of relegation.

A sports judge ordered Panathinaikos to settle debts with Essien, Argentine winger Sebastian Leto and Spanish forward Toche within three days or lose the points.

Club officials did not say how much money had been paid.

The Greek Super League has deducted three points from Panathinaikos after the club failed to settle unpaid wages with former player Jens Wemmer.

The league said the points will be returned if the debt is settled. The decision dropped Panathinaikos two places to 11th in the league with 29 points from 26 games.

Olympiakos players fined, sent on holiday following poor results

Olympiakos owner Evangelos Marinakis has fined his players for their disappointing results.

Olympiakos owner Evangelos Marinakis has fined his players €400,000 and ordered some of them to go on holiday until the end of the season after a draw left the defending Greek Superleague champions third in the table.

Marinakis, who also owns Nottingham Forest, said he will call up players from the club's under-20 squad for the final four games following the 1-1 draw against Levadiakos on Saturday.

PAOK president Ivan Savvidis given 3-year ban for taking pitch with gun

PAOK president Ivan Savvidis stormed the pitch against AEK Athens.

PAOK president Ivan Savvidis has been banned from all football grounds for three years after storming the pitch during a game against AEK Athens earlier this month while appearing to carry a gun in a hip holster.

The Greek Super League disciplinary committee docked the club three points, ending their title chances, and fined them €63,000. PAOK have also been ordered to play their next three home games behind closed doors.
